Attendance
Mark the class once. Keep the answer.
The class is marked in the morning. A parent calls later, or the next day. The mark should still be there, for students and for staff.

A paper register is in the classroom. The office hears about an absence by phone, then cannot show the parent which day was marked, or whether it was marked at all.
Staff arrival is a separate notebook. Who came, and who did not, is not something the office can answer without calling the class again.

The list is the class. Present and absent are recorded for that date. The office can open the day again when a parent asks, instead of trusting memory.

Staff

Staff attendance records arrival and departure. It is not a second system the office has to reconcile with the class register at the end of the month.

Across the months
A pattern is more useful than one missed day.
Monthly attendance feeds the progress report. The school can also see students whose attendance stays low across months, while there is still time to speak to the family.
